What so special about Sungai Lembing?
Welcome to my second blog. You wanna know why Sungai Lembing is so special? Sungai Lembing is a tin mining town 42 km
northwest of Kuantan in Pahang, Malaysia. Lembing is Malay for
spear, and "sungai" means river. Per local legend, the local ruler saw
a vision of a spear in the nearby river and thus named his town after this
vision. Until the 1970s, Sungai Lembing was a
major producer of underground tin. Sungai Lembing town developed in the
1880s when the British set up the tin mining industry, although the history of
mining in this area extends much further back. From 1891, the Pahang
Consolidated Company Limited, (PCCL), which was under British control, had a
77-year lease to mine the area. PCCL managed the mine from 1906 until its
liquidation in 1986 when world tin prices collapsed.

Sungai Lembing tin mining histoyThe pit mines were closed in 1986 due to high operational costs and low yields, but during their heyday they were among the largest and deepest in the world. The total tunnel length is 322 km, with a depth of between 610 m and 700 m. A museum highlighting the tin mining industry was opened in 2003. The museum is housed in an old bungalow once used by the mine manager. The museum houses a collection of mining artifacts.

Today the town of Sg Lembing is in decline although it was once the richest town in Pahang, known as El Dorado of the East. In the 1940s about 1400 people worked in the mine. Today many of the wooden shoplots are closed and people are moving away. The town straddles the river, and the main street on the right bank is split by an avenue of majestic trees. At the end, an old wooden building overlooks the padang where games of cricket and other social activities were held.
So, what are the interesting tourism spots of Sungai Lembing?
If we mention Sungai Lembing among area residents, we already know that the area was a former tin mine site. Even it was closed but the area has become the focus because there are several places that you visit either local or foreign tourists. Sungai Lembing Museum and Tin Tunnels Museum are two popular location a must-visit for tourists to view the history of commodities is growing at one time.
a. Panorama Hill
For those who want a more attractive location, Panorama Hill is one of the compulsory place to be.This is because its hilltop promises a particularly beautiful view of sunrise at once gave a memorable experience of truly memorable.
Panorama of the tall hill 291 meters above sea level gaining attraction. Those who want to climb to the top of the hill do not need a road trail because there are 815 stairs to get to atas. Those who have never set foot in Sungai Lembing, the journey only takes 30 minutes from the exit toll plazas East Coast Highway towards Kuantan next heading to the venue.
Those who want to climb the hill to start the journey as early as 5.30am for car park is always full of visitors vehicles to get there and the climb is between 20 to 40 minit. Once they got to the top, it is definitely much anticipated time of sunrise and where visitors can record a variety of exciting memories with friends or family members. The peak hill area is around 200 square meters, also provided two huts for patrons to relax after the climb.
b. Sungai Lembing
Museum
The Sungai
Lembing Museum showcases the history of the world-famous subterranean tin-mine.
Located in the old turn-of-the-century town of Sungai Lembing, which was built
with the wealth generated by the tin ore mined there, this interesting museum
is housed in a beautiful colonial-type bungalow on top of a hill that overlooks
the sleepy settlement below.
The town of
Sungai Lembing is located 42 kilometers from Kuantan town. A good road links
the two places. Here, at the museum visitors can browse the exhibits that
represent almost every facet of the now defunct largest underground tin mine in
the world. So famous was the mine at Sungai Lembing that it was often given the
nickname the eastern ‘El Dorado’. Tin was mined here way before the
British-owned Pahang Consolidated Company Limited ventured forth to
commercially work the place on a large scale in 1906 until it’s liquidation in
1986. In fact there is evidence that the mineral had attracted miners since prehistoric
times.
Today, the
place is brought back to life as a museum exhibiting information and historical
evidence of what was once Pahang’s richest tin manufacturer. The Sungai Lembing
Museum is managed by the Department of Museums and Antiquities, and the museum
is set up in what was once the General Manager’s house back in its heydays,
which is more than a hundred years old.
The Sungai
Lembing Museum opens from 9 AM till 5 PM on Mondays to Sundays, 9 AM to 12.15
PM and 2.45 PM to 5 PM on Fridays. It is closed on Hari Raya Aidilfitri and
Hari Raya Aidiladha.
c. Mount Tapis
About 16
kilometres from Sungai Lembing is Gunung Tapis, the 18th highest mountain
in the peninsula at 4, 957 feet. A favorite challenge for climbing and trekking
enthusiasts while in Pahang, the immediate vicinity in which Tapis mountain
resides is a well-kept nature park with camping areas, hot springs, white
water challenge in its fast-flowing rivers and great fishing, especially
for the much-sought after kelah cave (Malaysian
mahseer).
Although
compared to other mountains, taking on Tapis Mountain may not be an
overwhelming undertaking to the experienced climber, it is best not to
underrate mother nature and take extra precautions. The trek to the summit is
very challenging and is uphill all the way from the trail head. High fitness
level is necessary and trekking hours will be quite long through the undulating
trail. Get an experienced guide and always inform the officers at the police
station at Sungai Lembing before you start the climb.
The view from
the top is quite breath taking. Most of the time all you can ever see is a sea
of white clouds obscuring the view of the lowlands, with occasional breaks to
reveal the surrounding terrain. On a clear day, you can see Tahan
Mountain in the distance. The temperature at the peak can range between 18 to 8
degrees Celsius, depending on the time of day. The sunset from the peak is
great and on the way up you will come across a grove of miniature-like trees
dubbed by climbers as the bonsai garden. The stunted appearance of the treks
and shrubs is due to the relentless gust of wind that blows against the
hillside.
The tin mine in Sungai Lembing was once the deepest and longest underground mine in the world. It was operated on a big scale thus making Sungai Lembing renowned throughout the world. Visitors will experience a lifetime journey trough the “Original Mine” which displays various collections of mining paraphernalia’s. Visitors will come across mannequins, drilling machines, trams, interactive exhibits, info boards and other extravaganzas.

Underground tunnels or ‘pengkang’
were dug manually without using explosives. Prior to mining work, the
geological members will study the locations of tin ore deposits. Studies were
conducted on an ongoing basis to ensure that mining activities will perpetuate. The mine has the deepest tunnel. There are also several other mines, such as the
Taibeto mine, reaching more than 700 meters beneath, double the height of KLCC!
